Notes from Hannah

Water for the birds! This is a reminder to put a dish of water out for the birds when there is no snow on the ground as a source of water, and when the snow has hardened into ice. Bird baths are not recommended during very cold weather as the wet feathers may freeze before they can dry, and the birds would die of hypothermia.

Cats indoors! During the snow cover and arctic temperatures your cats probably do not want to go outdoors. The trick here is to continue to keep them indoors as the weather improves, so that by nesting season they may be converted to being totally indoor cats. People have told me that it works. Next to habitat loss, cats are a major cause of declining bird populations. Check National Audubon and American Bird Conservancy and their references for data.
